EWP simply does more for less than any other single technology on the market. The EWP brand water deionization devices are being sold for whole house water purification application that are rated at 500 gallons per day and high volumes up to 100 gpm for small modular commercial systems. The EWP devices deionize water and use no chemicals, do not bio-foul, are low pressure, operate on one-third watts-hour of power per gallon of water, are 95% efficient and are virtually maintenance free.
In light of the growing salt softener ban in California, other states are sure to follow. EWP is a superior alternative for salt softeners, or for Reverse Osmosis. EWP is half the total installed cost of reverse osmosis. EWP also removes more harmful pollutants such as arsenic, fluoride and nitrates than any other single technology.
Aquagen, LLC is a newly formed subsidiary of the parent Aqua EWP, LLC. The parent company has two patent applications for its brand name EWP water deionization device. Funded by private investment and developed under a DARPA research contract, Aqua EWP has been developing CDI devices for over 10 years and has over 1,000 systems installed around the world. EWP is device based on capacitive deionization. The EWP brand is becoming well recognized and has been in the water deionizing market since 1998, and in its current format of technology since 2006. In that time period over 24 validation studies have been done by independent third-party sources to document EWP’s performance.
CDI demineralizes water and water type fluids with 100% solid-state electronics. CDI uses low power DC voltage applied to electrodes made from a high surface area absorptive material. Water contaminants are attracted out of solution and held onto the surface of electrodes. It can remove any charged particle from water including bacteria, virus, metal ions, hardness, fats, proteins, organic carbon, dissolved or suspended solids, or minerals, etc.
From the deposition of dissolved minerals on to the electrode, an electrical charge results. At another part of the process, the voltage is reversed and the dissolved minerals that were attracted out of solution are again joined and discharged to waste. This cycle is repeated continuously.

In water purification this electrical charge is thrown away, because it’s at a level that is not very useful. But with energy storage this electrical charge can be turned into useful work and act like a battery. This gives rise to another application: energy storage.
With conversion of algae to oil, the electrical field charge can be valuable to break open the microbial cells where the oil resides –– such as with seaweed or hundreds of other algae strains –– and liberate the oil, which can be as much as 40%. All algae are comprised of Proteins, Carbohydrates, Fats and Nucleic Acids. It is this fatty acid (oil) that can be extracted and converted into a bio-oil. This gives rise to another application: disinfection.
When compared to devices of equal functionality, CDI device operation and construction costs are less than any other method of water treatment. CDI uses no chemicals and has a small waste stream compared to other TDS reduction technologies. The fact that CDI devices are less expensive to build and operate, use no chemicals, is low pressure, work fast, can improve water taste, remove odor, and improve chemistry in a single application makes it the next generation of fluid treatment technology.
One of the best features is that no maintenance is required, other than periodic cleaning of the electrodes, so no consumer will be inconvenienced by having to make arrangements for service personnel or maintenance contracts. Today, there are thousands of CDI device usage in homes, rural community water supplies, medical research and development, commercial buildings, schools and factories, which have produced water from coal bed methane gas production fields all over the world.
In the future there will be devices that purify water, create bio-oil that is refined into gasoline, portable sterilizers, protein separators, Homeland Security devices to remove level 1 carcinogens; and medical devices that prevent blood clots. In the not-too-distant future you might bring a portable and sterile water purifier with you before you even drink a glass of water. You will not currently find one single technology that can compare to that of CDI in one simple package. CDI will enter our lives as the next generation of clean and green water purification–even in a solar format
Aqua EWP has licensees assembling consumer and commercial- ready EWP systems in Korea, Europe, Australia and India. Aquagen LLC was formed to assemble and distribute EWP water treatment devices in the North American market. The Aquagen founding members are Robert Atlas and Dr. James Fajt.
Robert Atlas is CEO of Aquagen, and President of Aqua EWP both based in San Antonio, Texas. Mr. Atlas is one of the primary and most significant developers of this emerging technology: Electronic Water Purification (EWP)
Mr. Atlas has a Bachelors degree in Chemistry from the State University of New York at New Paltz, a Masters in Chemical Engineering from Stevens Institute of Technology and attended Baldwin Wallace EMBA program.
For the last 10 years Mr. Atlas has been involved with the purification and recycling of industrial wastewater. In this span of time a new class of Capacitive Deionization has emerged and is sold under the brand name EWP. It can be used on all types of water and wastewater purification including the desalination of ocean water for drinking water application. Prior to the development of EWP, he worked for a subsidiary of US Filter with water and wastewater purification applications.
Dr. James Fajt is President of Aquagen, and received his BS in Chemistry, MS in Environmental Studies and has a PhD in product development from Auburn University. Dr Fajt has several patents in CDI technology and has been involved in product development and intellectual property commercialization for over 20 years.
